About the treatment

Pinda sveda combines the therapeutic benefits of heat, massage, oil and herbs to encourage detoxification of the whole body. It awakens the cellular memory and stimulates intense healing and rejuvenation from the inside out. Soft muslin pouches of nourishing and strengthening herbs are specially prepared and bound and soaked in hot medicated oils to release their potent properties. These are then steadily massaged into the body using a sequence of rhythmical taps and strokes helping to regulate the nervous system, enhance circulation and draw fresh energy to the surface of the skin. Pinda sveda therapy is one of the most important sudation therapies of ayurveda and is excellent for vata and kapha disorders.

More information...

Pinda sveda is made up of the two Sanskrit words ‘pinda’ meaning ‘bolus’ and ‘sveda’ meaning ‘to sweat.’ Swedana or fomentation therapy is a specialised treatment in which sweating is induced by the application of heat and warmth in the form of steam, or by bringing the body in contact with heated medications. This therapy is exceptional in providing relief to stiffness, swelling and pain within the tissues of the body and is used for many conditions.

During the procedure, a medium to firm massage is given via densely packed, fist-sized drums of specific herbs. These linen bundles are called ‘kizhi.’ Their heating apparatus is maintained at a constant temperature with one bolus reintroduced to further medicated hot oils as the other is removed for treatment thus providing a continued and uninterrupted experience. The tempered heat of this treatment brings unparalleled relief and the sweating induced allows the body to rid itself of impurities.

There are many variants of pinda sveda which utilise many different, surprising and interesting materials solidified to make boluses. These are heated either directly or indirectly and applied to the body to relieve a wide variety of conditions.
